Another milestone!

newsflick:

Just passed the 20,000 followers mark today. Wohoo!

Thank you all for making tumbling worth while.

I know for many of the greats of tumblr this figure is a fraction of their followers but I’m grateful. I do believe I haven’t returned the favour by not being as committed to tumblr as I should be.

And thus it would be grate to get your feedback on what you would like to see more of from newsflick?

Get to Know a Tumblr - Sayid Ali

The Future Journalism Project is relatively new to Tumblr and we thought we’d start getting to know those who are inspiring us here.

Best way to do it, we think, is to hop on Skype and learn who the people are behind Tumblrs we’re following.

First up is Sayid Ali who focusses on news from the developing world with the great current events site NewsFlick.net.

We’ve been following him. We think you should too.

Run Time: 12:18. Download (Right Click).

Well here’s a treat. Googled my name, and this came up; an interview with Michael Cervieri from FJF. A lot has changed since but non the less enjoy my inconsistent rambling.

NewsFlick is a snapshot of today’s news. The site moves easily from updates from the Middle East to animal pictures.  If I were to pitch this tumblr blog, I’d look for stories having to do with foreign affairs. Check out the full review here.

It’s nice to know someone has taken the time to write a review about us. A great selection of blogs by Thomas Hynes. But about the animal pictures, we all deserve to smile or go “aww”, once in a while.
But seriously, thanks for following fellow tumblrers. You guys make tumblr worth while.

Help us send a special gift this season!
When purchasing a theme on Tumblr, there’s now an option to Donate $1 to the Red Cross, Doctors Without Borders, or the Electronic Frontier Foundation. And through the end of December, we’ll match your donations.

One thing that we should all commend tumblr for this year is its generous spirit in promoting humanitarian causes. Remember the Japan Tsunami and Quake and the East Africa famine, which tumblr was generous enough to match our donations? Proves social media can be a force for good. Hope you guys at tumblr keep up this generous spirit throughout 2012.

shortformblog:

Everyone starts somewhere. So, where did these bloggers start? You know, the really great ones that have such great content on Tumblr? Just for kicks, we did a little bit of investigating, and came up with this cool little bit of navel-gazing into the past of some of our favorite bloggers ever. In order, top to bottom: inothernews, kateoplis, soupsoup, brooklynmutt, pantslessprogressive, newsflick, thepoliticalnotebookmohandasgandhi, azspot (who is like a pioneer or something) and … us. What did your first post say? Find it and link to it in a reblog.

This brings back so many memories. Thanks for including me in the list. I just realised I didn’t introduce myself on tumblr as a first post, but went straight to the point. Just so you know newsflick started out as a final year University project on social media, which I attained a 1st for (pleased).

The longer I stayed on tumblr the more rewarding it became. By the way SFB thanks for this… it was a turning point of newsflick; introducing me to the likes of The Atlantic, The Economist, ABCNews, NPR ect.

So, looks like newsflick surpassed the 10,000 followers mark and I couldn’t be more grateful. It wasn’t long ago when NF reached the 1,000 milestone but this is just great. Tumblr has been an amazing platform to share news from around the world and join the conversation.
I have been introduced to some great individuals through tumblr, and If tumblr had an anual awards ceremony (highly recommend) they would grab a few. There are some tumblr’ers who tirelessly bring a much needed perpectives to our thirst for information, it is they that I look up to.
Lastly I thank all of you followers…you guys make tumblr unique. I hope NF doesn’t let you down.
By the way, my inbox has been a bit dry lately, so feel free to ask questions and I will attempt to answer them.
Yours, Sayid

Thank you to Tumblr for adding #Somalia to the Explore page.

Yes, a big thank you to tumblr. This is a good start to help raise awareness of the dire situation faced by East Africans and I am glad to be helping with the curation. The situation right now is really depressing so please guys pass the message and track this page.
